Diabetic? Swap Your Sip!

If you have diabetes, you know that it’s important to make smart food choices to better balance your blood sugar. Proper hydration is a big part of good nutrition, but drinking plain water can get boring. Check out these ideas to indulge in an occasional diabetic-friendly treat.

Milks
Regular milk–even the plain stuff–can easily bring you over your sugar and carbohydrate budget due to the naturally occurring sugars in milk. Opting for an unsweetened almond milk or reduced-sugar milk can help keep your numbers in check.

Sweeteners
Diabetics have a lot of options today. Between stevia, sucralose, erythitol, monk fruit, coconut sugar, agave and more, you’re sure to find something you like. Experiment with various powders and liquids, and always test your blood sugar before and after to see how each one impacts you.

Chocolate Milk
Avoid the excess sugar by mixing your own blend at home. Choose a low-fat, unsweetened glass of milk and add 3 teaspoons of cocoa powder with 2 tablespoons of the powdered zero-calorie sweetener of your choice.

Sweet Tea
There are lots of sugar-free instant and ready-to-drink teas available, but you can also brew your own. Steep tea with your favorite crushed fruit, like berries. Strain, chill, and sweeten the brew with your choice of no-calorie sweetener.

Chai Latte
Avoid the coffeehouse sugar crash, and steep a couple of chai tea bags in a cup of unsweetened almond milk, and add a few drops of liquid vanilla-flavored sweetener. Enjoy it hot or iced!

Lemonade
Summer isn’t over and neither is lemonade season. It’s easy to mix water, a few fresh-squeezed lemons, some zero-calorie sweetener, and ice for a tasty refreshment without carbs or calories.
