Recognize the Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer

Did you know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

Today in the US, most breast cancers are found at an early stage through routine mammography screening, before any warning signs appear. However, because not all breast cancers are detected through mammography, it’s still important to know the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

While the warning signs of breast cancer vary among women, the most common signs are either a change in the look or feel of the breast, or a change in the look or feel of the nipple or nipple discharge.

Signs to watch out for include:

  • A new lump, hard knot, or thickening inside the breast or underarm area.
  • Unexplained swelling, warmth, darkening or redness of the breast.
  • A new change in the size or shape of the breast.
  • New dimpling or puckering of the skin.
  • An itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple.
  • A “pulling in” of the nipple or another part of the breast.
  • Sudden nipple discharge with no explanation.
  • New pain within a part of the breast that doesn’t go away.

If you have any of these warning signs, you should see a healthcare provider to look for other benign conditions and rule out breast cancer. Having any of these changes doesn’t mean you have breast cancer, but it’s important to catch any problems as early as possible for the best treatment options. The only way to know for sure is to see a healthcare provider.
