Women's Eye Health Awareness | Faulkner's Drug Store

Did you know that April is Women’s Eye Health Month? At Faulkner’s Drug Store, we want to remind you to make more time for your eye health in 2017. One vital aspect of healthy eyesight is getting routine eye exams to help detect progressive eye conditions, like glaucoma, which have few to zero signs in the early stages.

Sometimes people experience sudden eye symptoms like a change in vision or eye pain. It’s critical to see an eye doctor right away if you have any of the following symptoms.

  • A sudden onset of flashing lights in your field of vision.
  • An increase in the amount of “floaters” that you see.
  • A shadow in your peripheral vision.
  • A gray “curtain” moving across your field of vision.
The above symptoms can indicate a possible retinal detachment.

  • Any sudden loss of vision could indicate various eye diseases and conditions such as macular degeneration or some types of glaucoma. Loss of vision can even be a precursor to stroke.

  • While most eye diseases are painless, some conditions do cause eye pain, including glaucoma, dry eye, a scratched cornea, or eye cancer–so never ignore eye pain.

  • Eye injuries should be evaluated by a doctor, especially if redness or pain lingers beyond 20 minutes.

  • If you are feeling discomfort in your eye after thinking a small particle might have gotten in your eye, you might have a foreign particle in the eye, which can result in infection if ignored.

  • Redness in only one eye can point to deep inflammation that needs to be evaluated by a physician.

  • For those who wear contact lenses, eye pain, redness, or discomfort should always be examined.

  • Blurry vision–including some that clears up–can be a sign of many eye problems including glaucoma, uveitis, torn retina, or macular degeneration.
